The role of aerosol halogen speciation for tropospheric reactive halogen and oxidant abundances Becky Alexander, University of Washington Reactive halogens in the lower part of the atmosphere impact the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere, influencing the lifetime of most reduced trace gases such as methane. The largest source of reactive halogens is from heterogeneous reactions on sea salt aerosol (chlorine and bromine) and on the ocean surface (iodine). Due to their high reactivity, inorganic halides are thought to contribute the majority of the heterogeneous source of gas-phase reactive halogens. The abundance, speciation, and reactivity of organic forms of halogen aerosol is uncertain. Using model calculations, atmospheric observations, and laboratory studies, I will show that organohalogens in aerosol act to stabilize the halogens providing a reservoir of halogens in the aerosol phase. This in turn influences the reactivity of halogens in aerosol. Using global model calculations informed by the observations and laboratory studies, I will show the implications of this chemistry for the halogen and oxidant budgets in the troposphere.
