Global Freshwater Challenges with Dr. William Krantz, Emeritus Wednesday, September 16, 3:00 PM, Eldorado Room, Fraiser Meadows, 350 Ponca Pl, Boulder, CO 80303 Although 70% of the Earth is covered by water, only 0.007% is accessible freshwater. Moreover, these freshwater resources are very unevenly distributed among the countries of the world. This has created a global water crisis that is being exacerbated by climate change, continuing population growth, and increasing water demands for agricultural and industrial uses.This seminar will introduce some facts and figures on the quantity and distribution of freshwater resources among the countries of the world. An overview will be given of current and emerging water-stressed regions, including the states in the Colorado River Basin.The impact of humankind on creating critical, large-scale water shortages will be documented with rather startling and sobering photos. This will lead to a discussion of how technology can address the freshwater challenges facing the world. Means for addressing the high cost of increasing our freshwater resources will also be discussed. Biographical Sketch William B. Krantz received a BA in chemistry in 1961 from Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana, a BS in chemical engineering in 1962 from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a PhD in chemical engineering in 1968 from the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer.He is a President’s Teaching Scholar and Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado and an Ohio Eminent Scholar and Professor Emeritus at the University of Cincinnati. From 2005–2008, he held the Isaac M. Meyer Chair Professorship at the National University of Singapore and is now a Visiting Professor at the Singapore Membrane Technology Center at Nanyang Technological University.He is the author of two books, co-editor of three research monographs, co-author of 275 technical papers, and co-inventor on 26 patents. He has been awarded Guggenheim, NSF-NATO, and three Fulbright Fellowships. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Engineering Education, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and North American Membrane Society.
