What the source said

Boaz Ilan, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of California Merced Whitham Averaging for Generalized NLS Equations We derive the Whitham modulation equations for generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations with full dispersion (FDNLS) in the semiclassical regime. By assuming a family of two-phase solutions, we obtain a hydrodynamic system governing the slow evolution of wavenumber, mass, and momentum. The weakly nonlinear regime exposes a novel nonlinear instability mechanism unique to two-phase wavetrains: long-wavelength modulations can grow even when the corresponding one-phase wave is stable. We analyze this for finite-depth water waves and a discrete NLS equation, and validate the results by direct numerical simulations. This is joint work with Mark Hoefer and Patrick Sprenger.
